The World’s First Methanol Bunker Tanker Maya Cosulich Built for Singapore

The world’s first methanol-fueled bunker vessel has been launched in China, marking a major milestone in expanding the infrastructure needed to support alternative marine fuels.

The vessel, named Maya Cosulich, was designed by SeaTech Solutions International and built at Taizhou Maple Shipyard in China. It is owned by the Italian Fratelli Cosulich Group and will operate under a time charter agreement with international commodity trader Trafigura.

Following its delivery, scheduled for late 2025Maya Cosulich will operate in Singapore under TFG Marine, a global joint venture between Trafigura, Frontline, and Golden Ocean specializing in marine fuel supply and trading. Fratelli Cosulich Bunkers Singapore will oversee the vessel’s technical management and operations.

With a deadweight of 7,990 tons, the vessel features coated cargo tanks designed to safely transport both green methanol and biofuels. It is equipped with two fixed-pitch propellers, each driven by an electric motor through a reduction gearbox, and three dual-fuel generators. An onboard energy storage system helps optimize power distribution and generator efficiency.

The project was originally ordered in December 2023, and construction of a sister vessel, Anna Cosulich, began in August 2024, also at a Chinese shipyard.

The Maya Cosulich project represents the culmination of collaboration launched in 2023 between Fratelli Cosulich GroupTFG Marine, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), and several technical and shipbuilding partners. The vessel was designed to meet the specific requirements of the Singapore market and is fitted with two mass flow meters, fully compliant with MPA’s methanol bunkering standards.

Once operational, Maya Cosulich will become Singapore’s first dual-fuel methanol bunker tanker, underscoring the country’s role as a global leader in clean fuel adoption and marine decarbonization.
