On June 30, the tugboat Cala Gullo sank in the Port of Barcelona after a collision with the Malta-flagged container ship MSC Cape Sounio.
The incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. local time while the tug was assisting the container vessel during a turning maneuver as it was departing from the Hutchison Ports Best terminal. The collision caused the tug to sink with three crew members on board.
The port’s emergency response teams acted swiftly, and a standby pilot boat successfully rescued all three crew members without injuries. No pollution was reported in the water.
An investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
Following the incident, MSC Cape Sounio continued its scheduled voyage, departing Barcelona and heading to La Spezia, Italy, where it is expected to arrive on July 2.
