Guangzhou Port Launches Greater Bay Area’s First Zero-Carbon Container Route
16 October 2026 38

Guangzhou Port has launched the first zero-carbon container shipping route in the Greater Bay Area, deploying a fully electric vessel for cross-border services between Nansha and Hong Kong.

The new service is operated by the battery-electric container vessel Sui Gang Dian Hang 02, with a capacity of 240 TEU.

The ship operates between the Nansha port area and international container terminals in Hong Kong, carrying mainly furniture and consumer goods.

A key feature of Sui Gang Dian Hang 02 is its fully electric propulsion system, which uses containerised battery units instead of conventional marine fuel.

The battery modules are designed in a container format and can be replaced by crane, allowing the vessel to restore its energy supply relatively quickly without remaining alongside for lengthy charging periods.

The batteries can also be charged directly onboard using shore-based power infrastructure.

A dedicated digital platform monitors the vessel’s energy system, including power consumption, equipment condition, maintenance requirements and ship-to-shore operations.

Electric propulsion eliminates direct carbon dioxide emissions and other exhaust pollutants during vessel operation.

According to local authorities, each vessel in the series is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 550 tonnes per year.

Over its projected operating life, one vessel could prevent more than 19,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The new service forms part of Guangzhou’s broader programme to develop cleaner shipping and expand the electrification of short-distance container routes across the Greater Bay Area.

Relatively short and regular services are particularly suitable for battery-powered vessels because charging or battery replacement can be arranged at fixed ports along the route.

The operator has not yet disclosed the service frequency, expected cargo volumes or a wider deployment schedule for additional electric vessels.

The launch of Sui Gang Dian Hang 02 shows how battery-electric container ships are beginning to move from demonstration projects into regular commercial operations between major ports.
