Record Drought on the Danube Disrupts River Cruises and Commercial Shipping

Europe is experiencing one of its most severe summer droughts in recent decades, and the Danube River is among the hardest-hit waterways. Exceptionally low water levels are disrupting both commercial shipping and the river cruise industry across several countries.  

In Hungary, the Danube has dropped to near-record lows. In Budapest, water levels have fallen to just a few centimeters above the historic minimum recorded in recent years. Several cruise ships have been forced to remain at berth, while others have modified their itineraries or transferred passengers by bus around the shallow sections of the river.  

The impact extends beyond tourism. In Romania, the Danube has reached its lowest level in nearly 30 years, exposing sandbanks and making navigation increasingly difficult for cargo vessels. Barges transporting grain and other commodities are operating with reduced loads or have been delayed, affecting one of Europe’s key inland transport corridors.  

The Danube is Europe’s second-longest river and an essential route for transporting grain, fuel, chemicals and industrial cargo between Central and Eastern Europe. Low water levels reduce vessel capacity, increase transport costs and create additional pressure on road and rail logistics.  

River cruise operators have also been affected. Several companies have cancelled departures, altered cruise programs or introduced bus transfers where vessels can no longer safely navigate. Hungary alone welcomes around 600,000 river cruise passengers each year, making the Danube one of Europe’s most important cruise destinations.  

Meteorologists attribute the situation to prolonged heatwaves, below-average rainfall and persistent drought across much of Europe. Although rainfall is forecast in some regions, shipping companies and tourism operators continue to closely monitor water levels as navigation conditions remain challenging.
