A new phase of the MSC Baltic III salvage operation has begun off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Since 31 July, recovery teams have been gradually pulling the grounded container ship closer to shore, where it will be dismantled in sections.
The vessel originally carried 472 containers, and 471 have already been successfully removed. The final container remains on board due to damage and will be taken away together with the ship's hull during the dismantling process.
Preparations for the operation have been underway for several months. Salvage specialists installed heavy-duty chains and towing systems to move the vessel safely, while work to remove parts of the ship's superstructure began earlier this summer.
Small amounts of fuel also remain on board, and environmental teams continue to monitor the area to prevent any possible pollution during the recovery operation.
The MSC Baltic III ran aground off the coast of Newfoundland in February 2025 after losing propulsion during a severe storm. All 20 crew members were successfully evacuated, and no casualties were reported.
The recovery operation is expected to continue over the coming weeks as specialists carefully dismantle and remove the remaining sections of the vessel.
