Technology group Wärtsilä has signed a contract to supply the main engine and propulsion equipment for a new 3,800 DWT heavy-lift vessel being built for Netherlands-based operator Hartman Seatrade. The order was booked in Q4 2025 and supports construction at Rock Shipbuilding, the shipyard recently established by the owner.
The newbuild will be powered by the Wärtsilä 31 four-stroke engine, selected for its high fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions. Wärtsilä notes that the engine’s modular design helps lower maintenance requirements and operating costs, while offering flexibility for both slow and fast steaming profiles.
As part of the scope, Wärtsilä will also deliver a gearbox enabling PTI, PTO and PTH operating modes to optimise energy use, alongside a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) system managed by Wärtsilä EcoControl and hydrodynamically optimised using OPTI Design. Wärtsilä expects additional savings from operating the propeller at low rpm when full thrust is not required. Delivery of the full equipment package is scheduled for spring 2027.
