The Tanzanian-flagged container vessel Golden Star 1 sank near Indonesia’s Batam Island just hours after departing Singapore.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 5, approximately six kilometers off Batam, one of Indonesia’s largest islands located near the busy Singapore Strait. According to preliminary reports, the vessel began taking on water before rapidly losing buoyancy and eventually sinking.
A total of nine crew members were on board at the time of the accident. Thanks to the swift response of Indonesian rescue services, all crew members were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.
According to maritime authorities, the vessel had departed Singapore earlier that day and was operating on a regional route. The ship was carrying approximately 107 containers. Following the sinking, authorities warned nearby vessels about the possible presence of drifting containers in the area.
Despite the incident, shipping traffic through the Singapore and Malacca Straits has continued without disruption. There have also been no reports of oil pollution or environmental damage so far.
Built in 1995, Golden Star 1 sailed under the Tanzanian flag. The exact cause of the flooding and subsequent sinking remains under investigation.
Maritime authorities from Singapore and Indonesia continue to monitor the area and coordinate safety measures to ensure secure navigation around the accident site.
