🚢 MAN Energy Solutions Sets a Maritime Milestone
The company has unveiled the world’s most powerful two-stroke engine running on methanol, delivering 82,440 kW at 80 RPM.
⚙️ The first engine is currently under construction at CSSC-MES Diesel in China. It will be one of twelve engines powering a series of 24,000 TEU container ships built for:
-
Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) – 7 vessels (Nantong COSCO KHI shipyard)
-
COSCO Shipping Lines – 5 vessels (Dalian COSCO KHI shipyard)
🗓 Delivery of the first engine is scheduled for June 2025.
Each engine will feature an advanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system with a turbocharger bypass function — the largest dual-loop EGR system ever installed on a two-stroke engine.
💬 Bjarne Foldager, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions, stated:
“By leveraging methanol’s potential, we are pushing shipping closer to a carbon-free future. We believe methanol will become a key fuel across various maritime sectors.”
📊 MAN engines have already accumulated over 600,000 operational hours on methanol, across both newbuilds and retrofitted vessels.
💬 Christian Ludwig, Head of Sales, added:
“Renewable methanol is a promising low-carbon marine fuel. When using green methanol, a vessel can achieve carbon-neutral operations.”
