Viking Line and Ports of Turku and Stockholm Advance Green Shipping Corridor Toward 2035 Goal
13 February 2026 12

Viking Line, together with the Port of Turku and Ports of Stockholm, is progressing with a joint initiative aimed at establishing a green shipping corridor between Turku and Stockholm by 2035. The project focuses on reducing emissions and accelerating the transition toward sustainable maritime transport in the Baltic region.

After two years of implementation, the partners report concrete progress in the use of biofuels, development of shore-side power infrastructure, and planning for zero-emission port operations.

Since the project’s launch on February 6, 2024, the participating organizations have strengthened cooperation through joint technical planning and the refinement of a shared roadmap designed to achieve the corridor’s long-term environmental goals.

To mark the two-year milestone, representatives from all partners gathered aboard the ferry Viking Glory to review achievements, discuss lessons learned, and identify remaining challenges and future opportunities.

Viking Line CEO Marcus Risberg highlighted the project as an example of industry-wide cooperation supporting the transition to carbon-free shipping:

“In just two years, we have taken significant steps forward, not least through investments in renewable biogas. However, this work requires continued commitment and close collaboration between shipping companies, ports, policymakers and authorities.”

The Port of Turku emphasized advances in shore power planning and infrastructure development, including preparations linked to the ferry terminal redevelopment project. Another key milestone was the launch of the first publicly accessible charging station for heavy-duty trucks within Finnish ports.

Officials from Stockholm also reiterated the city’s strong climate ambitions, noting that shipping plays a critical role in moving toward fossil-free transportation. Long-term investments in electrification and port energy infrastructure are expected to support broader decarbonization efforts across the maritime sector.

The Green Shipping Corridor initiative is viewed as a major step toward reducing emissions from both passenger and cargo traffic across the Baltic Sea region, setting a model for sustainable maritime cooperation in Northern Europe.
