MSC Cruises has proposed a plan to evacuate seafarers from commercial vessels stranded in Middle Eastern waters.
The company suggests using its cruise ships currently operating in the region to transport crews to safe locations. Discussions on the proposal are ongoing.
Several cruise vessels are currently in the Persian Gulf, including MSC Euribia, Celestyal Discovery, Mein Schiff 4, Mein Schiff 5 and others, which could potentially be deployed for the operation.
The idea was presented on April 14 during an industry event in Miami Beach. MSC is now coordinating with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
⚠️ Key point
The situation remains highly unstable, and the plan depends on security clearances required for vessels to leave the Persian Gulf.
🌍 Context
Amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, a large number of seafarers remain stuck onboard anchored commercial vessels, unable to leave the region.
Cruise ships with a capacity of up to 17,000 people could provide a practical solution for large-scale evacuation.
💡 Conclusion
MSC Cruises’ initiative could become a critical humanitarian solution for seafarers trapped in a high-risk zone.
