DNV has published the July 2026 edition of its classification rules and standards for ships and offshore units. The updated edition includes new class notations and technical revisions aimed at supporting safer operations, new technologies and the maritime industry’s transition toward more sustainable shipping. The new rules will enter into force on 1 January 2027.
Following an industry consultation process, 92 updated documents have been released. The revisions affect a wide range of technical requirements and are intended for shipowners, shipyards, designers, equipment manufacturers, suppliers and flag administrations.
Among the most significant additions are several new class notations. The new Battery Ready notation identifies vessels designed for future integration of battery energy systems, making it easier to upgrade ships with hybrid or electric propulsion technologies.
Another important addition is Shore Power Ready, which applies to ships prepared to connect to shore-side electrical power while alongside in port. This helps reduce fuel consumption, emissions and engine running time during port stays.
DNV has also introduced the Fatigue Life (FL) notation. It specifies the design fatigue life of ships and offshore structures under defined operating conditions, giving owners and operators clearer information about long-term structural performance.
The July 2026 update continues DNV’s focus on supporting modern vessel design, lower-emission technologies and improved operational safety. New requirements are intended to help the industry prepare for future environmental regulations and the wider adoption of innovative propulsion and energy solutions.
Although the publication does not automatically require existing vessels to be modified, the updated rules will influence the design and classification of future newbuildings and offshore units. Shipowners planning modernization projects may also choose to adopt some of the new class notations where applicable.
The latest DNV rules represent another step in the ongoing development of international classification standards, helping shipowners, shipyards and equipment manufacturers prepare for the next generation of safer and more efficient ships.
