The cargo ship Corsage C, sailing under the flag of Vanuatu, sank off the coast of the Greek island of Andros while en route from Albania to Ukraine.
According to Greek authorities, the vessel was carrying around 3,000 tonnes of baking soda when it struck a rocky area north of the island and began taking on water.
The ship quickly flooded and eventually sank.
The crew consisted of 9 seafarers — 8 Turkish nationals and 1 Azerbaijani citizen. All crew members were successfully rescued by the Greek Coast Guard.
Reports indicate that some sailors were pulled directly from the water, while others were evacuated from the rocky shoreline area.
Following the distress call, authorities deployed rescue vessels, coast guard units, and anti-pollution equipment to the scene.
Greek officials have already started placing floating containment booms around the wreck site to prevent possible fuel leakage and marine pollution.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially confirmed. However, the incident occurred in a challenging area of the Aegean Sea known for its rocky coastline and strong currents.
An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
