Fortescue, Trovio, and GH2 Issue World’s First Digital Fuel Certificate for Ammonia Bunkering
In a major milestone for the green fuels economy, Fortescue, in collaboration with Trovio and the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2), has successfully completed the world’s first digital certification of an ammonia ship-to-ship bunkering operation. The pilot project involved the Fortescue Green Pioneer, the first ocean-going vessel with a dual-fuel ammonia engine, during a recent bunkering operation at the Port of Rotterdam.
While the operation primarily focused on safety and handling protocols for ammonia as a marine fuel, it also underscored the critical role of digital infrastructure in enabling sustainable fuel scalability
The CorTenX platform recorded the entire supply chain—from the origin of the fuel to the vessel. It logs:
🔹 port and vessel details,
🔹 timestamped transactions,
🔹 sustainability metrics aligned with IMO standards, national regulations, and voluntary initiatives such as the Green Hydrogen Standard.
These data points are cryptographically secured and made accessible to the public, independent auditors, and regulators for third-party certification and compliance.
CorTenX also supports mass balance methodologies, enabling seamless tracking across multiple stakeholders, accurate emissions accounting, and the issuance of Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions reduction claims.
Developed by Trovio, CorTenX is purpose-built for environmental markets, offering a secure, compliant, and API-first registry infrastructure. The platform is trusted by governments and institutional partners and supports:
— serialized environmental asset creation and management,
— real-time auditability,
— fine-grained access control,
— regulatory-grade data integrity.
This pilot not only validates the viability of ammonia as a marine fuel, but also highlights the importance of transparent digital registries in bridging the gap between sustainability goals and market execution—especially as the maritime sector transitions to a greener future.
