🇪🇺 European transport groups call for more clean fuel
European shipowners, airlines and environmentalists have called on the EU to urgently increase production of clean fuel for ships and aircraft. This is necessary to meet climate targets and upcoming IMO decisions on emissions reductions
The organizations are demanding that shipping and aviation fuels be included in the priorities of the new European Clean Industrial Deal (CID), which the EU will present on February 26. According to the Draghi report, decarbonizing transport will require €100 billion per year
Currently, clean fuel production is insufficient: for example, SAF covers less than 1% of global demand. The STIP plan should stimulate production so that the EU meets 40% of green fuel needs
✈️ The authors of the statement propose using revenues from emissions trading, creating a partnership platform and developing fuel infrastructure at ports and airports. Shipping needs €40bn a year to decarbonise, and without massive investment, Europe risks losing competitiveness
