Incident with containership Mississippi in Long Beach: dozens of containers in the water

On September 9, the containership Mississippi, sailing under the Portuguese flag and operated by ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, suffered a container stack collapse while berthing at Pier G in the port of Long Beach, USA.

Incident details

  • Around 67 containers fell into the water.

  • Containers struck the pier and damaged the Stax 2 barge, used for emissions collection.

  • According to the U.S. Coast Guard, all fallen containers belonged to ZIM’s cargo.

Emergency response

Emergency vessels and aircraft, supported by the U.S. Coast Guard, were dispatched to contain the incident and survey the affected area.

A port workboat was observed pushing drifting containers to reduce navigational risks.

The contents of the lost containers have not yet been identified.
