Three vessels — Hav Frakt, Bergfjord and Xanthia — collided in Valderhaugfjorden near Ålesund, Norway, during the early hours of October 4.

A Mayday distress call was received by the Norwegian coastal radio system at approximately 1:37 a.m. local time. The vessels were navigating a relatively narrow section of the fjord when the collision occurred.

A rescue helicopter, lifeboat and emergency services were dispatched to the scene. The crews remained on board because all three vessels stayed afloat and remained operational.

According to preliminary information, two of the vessels were heading south while the third was sailing north. All three vessels sustained material damage in the collision.

The general cargo vessel Bergfjord suffered the most visible damage. Its bow was damaged, and water reportedly entered the bow thruster compartment.

Following the incident, two vessels berthed in Ålesund, while the third remained at anchor in the fjord. No injuries or marine pollution were reported.

Norwegian authorities have launched an investigation into the accident. Vessel inspections, crew interviews and routine alcohol testing are being conducted.

The official cause of the collision has not yet been established. Darkness, poor visibility and restricted space in the narrow section of the fjord have been identified as conditions that may have contributed to the incident.

The Norwegian Maritime Authority stated that the vessels would not be permitted to resume their voyages until safety inspections had been completed and their seaworthiness confirmed.
