The fishing vessel Lake Bay ran aground off the California coast on the morning of August 21, 2026. The incident occurred in the surf zone near North Beach within Point Reyes National Seashore.
The 58-foot fishing vessel was catching squid when it went ashore. Five people were reportedly onboard. The crew issued a distress call, prompting a response from the United States Coast Guard.
Crews from Coast Guard stations Bodega Bay and Golden Gate participated in the operation, along with an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. No injuries were reported.
Authorities prevent potential fuel spill
The Coast Guard and National Park Service established a unified command to coordinate the response. Technical assistance was also provided by Marin County Fire, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response.
Initial reports indicated that Lake Bay was carrying approximately 1,000 gallons of diesel. Responders ultimately removed about 1,400 gallons of diesel and 150 gallons of hydraulic oil from the vessel.
Crews also began removing the squid cargo and other materials that could pose an environmental risk. According to the Coast Guard, there were no reported active fuel leaks, pollution or impacts on local wildlife.
North Beach was temporarily closed to visitors so emergency personnel and salvage specialists could work safely around the stranded vessel. Members of the public were asked to avoid the affected area.
Cause of grounding under investigation
The crew reportedly attempted to pull the vessel from the beach with a smaller boat as the tide rose. Lake Bay became partially buried in the sand, however, and the towline broke during the attempt.
After responders eliminated the immediate pollution threat, responsibility for removing the vessel was transferred to its owner and a contracted salvage company.
The cause of the grounding has not been determined. The United States Coast Guard has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
