The government of the Sakhalin Region has announced that the salvage plan for the Chinese bulk carrier An Yang 2, which ran aground near the port of Nevelsk, has been finalized. The document, prepared by the vessel’s owner in accordance with the Russian Merchant Shipping Code, was submitted to supervisory authorities and the Nevelsk port administration in May 2025.
According to Alexey Glaub, Deputy Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure of the Sakhalin Region, the owner intends to begin removing the vessel from the port’s waters in August, provided weather conditions are favorable. The operation is under the personal supervision of Governor Valery Limarenko and the regional government.
As part of the preparations, specialists from the Maritime Rescue Service (Morspassluzhba) and Nevelsk Utility Networks have already completed the removal of part of the fuel from the grounded vessel. Additionally, experts from the Far Eastern Scientific Research and Design Institute of the Maritime Fleet (DalNIIMF) have completed a hydrographic survey of the area where An Yang 2 ran aground.
To recap, the bulk carrier An Yang 2 ran aground near Nevelsk on February 10, 2025. The vessel is carrying approximately 1,000 tons of coal and is fueled with 54 tons of diesel and 706 tons of heavy fuel oil (mazut).
