The Port of Tyne in northeast England will temporarily suspend navigation for almost nine hours while specialists carry out a complex operation to remove a collapsed container crane following a recent port accident.
The closure is part of an extensive recovery effort after a container ship collided with a quay crane, causing the structure to collapse onto the vessel. Several containers were damaged during the incident, and part of the terminal infrastructure sustained significant damage.
Marine engineers, heavy-lift specialists, and emergency response teams are now working together to safely dismantle and remove the collapsed crane. Before lifting operations can begin, the damaged containers must be secured and the vessel stabilized to minimize the risk of further structural movement.
Because of the complexity of the operation, all vessel movements on the affected section of the River Tyne will be temporarily suspended. Port authorities have issued navigation warnings and coordinated with shipping companies to reduce disruption as much as possible.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during the incident. However, the accident has already affected port operations and caused delays for commercial traffic using the Port of Tyne.
