CMA CGM Unveils CMA CGM Seine — the World’s Largest Dual-Fuel Container Ship
17 April 2025 10

On April 15, in Shanghai, the French shipping and logistics group CMA CGM officially named and took delivery of the CMA CGM Seine — the world’s largest container vessel powered by a dual-fuel engine. The launch is part of China’s broader effort to strengthen its position in the global shipbuilding industry.

Built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp — the world’s largest shipbuilder — the vessel boasts a capacity of 24,000 TEU, a length of 399 meters, and a beam of 61.3 meters, allowing it to carry up to 220,000 tons of cargo.

The CMA CGM Seine is scheduled to enter service on the Far East–Europe route starting April 18. It is the first of four vessels in a new series built specifically for CMA CGM.

One of the key features of the vessel is its environmental efficiency. Equipped with a dual-fuel engine and an 18,600 m³ LNG tank, the CMA CGM Seine can travel up to 20,000 nautical miles without refueling. Compared to conventional vessels, it can reduce sulfur and particulate emissions by 99%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 85%, and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20%.
