A freezer trawler processes the catch entirely on board to customers’ specifications, converting it into frozen-at-sea fillets, blocks or heads and gutted forms. Freezer trawlers can be 60-70 metres long and can go to sea for six weeks at a time with a crew of more than 35. They process the fish into fillets within hours of being caught. On-board fishmeal factories process the waste so everything is recycled.
The world’s largest freezer trawler by gross tonnage is the 144 metre Annelies Ilena, formerly the Atlantic Dawn. In 2015, Annelies Ilena was detained by the Irish Navy and the Marine Fisheries Protection Agency for breaching regulations. [ 1 ] The owners were subsequently fined €105,000 for illegal fishing in Irish waters. It has a capacity to process 350 tonnes of fish per day, can carry 3,000 tonnes of fuel and store 7,000 tonnes of sorted and frozen catch. It uses flatbed forklifts to facilitate unloading.
