On March 20, 2026, Viking announced the float-out of Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship designed to operate with zero emissions. The milestone marks a major step forward in the vessel’s construction and its first time entering the water.
The ship is scheduled for delivery in November 2026 and will spend its inaugural season sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
“The float-out of Viking Libra marks another important milestone for Viking and our ongoing partnership with Fincantieri,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking.
He added that from the very beginning, Viking’s ship design strategy has focused on reducing fuel consumption, and that Viking Libra represents the company’s most environmentally advanced vessel to date. According to Hagen, investing in hydrogen was a deliberate decision aimed at achieving a truly zero-emission solution for the cruise sector.
The float-out ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, signaling the vessel’s transition into the final stage of construction. The event began with the traditional cutting of a ceremonial cord, which triggered the flow of water into the building dock.
Over the following two days, Viking Libra will be fully floated out and then moved to a nearby outfitting dock, where final assembly, systems installation, and interior finishing will be completed.
Among those attending the ceremony were Gilberto Tobaldi, director of Fincantieri’s Ancona yard, along with Viking executives including Karin Hagen, Executive Vice President, and Enrico Prunotto, Senior Vice President of Ocean Operations, who thanked the shipyard team on behalf of the company.
The launch of Viking Libra highlights the growing shift in the cruise industry toward alternative fuels and cleaner vessel technologies, as operators seek to reduce emissions and meet increasingly ambitious sustainability targets.
