A serious maritime accident occurred near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz after the 32-year-old bulk carrier LUNI collided with another vessel while sailing toward Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates. The collision took place off the coast of Bandar Abbas, Iran, in one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
According to Iranian maritime authorities, the impact caused severe structural damage to the vessel. The crew issued a distress signal shortly after the collision, while emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene.
Rescue operations were carried out by Iranian authorities, who successfully evacuated all 23 crew members from the sinking vessel. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, despite the seriousness of the incident.
Following the evacuation, the damaged bulk carrier eventually sank, while authorities secured the surrounding area and began assessing potential navigational and environmental risks. The identity of the second vessel involved in the collision has not yet been officially disclosed.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important maritime corridors in the world, carrying a significant share of global oil and cargo traffic. Incidents in this region often attract international attention due to the high density of commercial shipping.
