S-100: A New Standard for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS)
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved S-100, a new universal data standard set to power the next generation of digital navigation. This marks a major shift toward more accurate, dynamic, and integrated maritime navigation systems.
Several new product specifications are being developed based on the S-100 framework, including:
-
S-101 – updated Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC), replacing the outdated S-57 standard
-
S-102 – high-resolution bathymetric surface data
-
S-104 – tidal and water level information
-
S-111 – surface current data
-
S-124 – digital navigational warnings
-
S-129 – under keel clearance management tools
These specifications will allow ECDIS systems to integrate a broader range of real-time data, providing mariners with a more complete and up-to-date picture of the maritime environment.
According to IMO Resolution MSC.530(106):
-
From January 1, 2026, ECDIS systems compliant with S-100 will be permitted for use.
-
From January 1, 2029, such systems will become mandatory for all new installations.
