SBM Offshore has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its latest project — a floating offshore production and storage facility for blue ammonia.
The facility is designed to convert extracted natural gas into ammonia while simultaneously capturing carbon dioxide using Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology. The resulting ammonia will serve as a low-carbon fuel for the energy sector, maritime transport, and the global ammonia market.

According to Olivier Ijsic, SBM Offshore’s Business Development Director, the Blue Ammonia project marks “a pivotal step in the company’s path to decarbonization and diversification, exemplifying our TRUE. BLUE. TRANSITION. strategy.” He emphasized that the project opens new opportunities for the “blue economy” and supports SBM Offshore’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
ABS has reviewed the project for compliance with international class and regulatory requirements. With over 70 years of experience in offshore technologies, ABS continues to provide expert guidance and assessments for safe asset management and the adoption of innovative solutions in offshore operations.
