On June 9, 2025, at approximately 10:30 AM local time, a container explosion occurred on the container ship Wan Hai 503, about 130–144 km southwest of the Kerala coast near Azhikkal.
There were 22 crew members on board. Eighteen were rescued by the passing vessel One Marvel with assistance from the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. Four crew members are reported missing. Several people were injured, including cases of severe burns.
After the explosion, the ship is drifting and continues to burn, producing thick black smoke visible from a great distance.
