Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has reached a historic milestone, becoming the first container shipping company in the world to operate a fleet of 1,000 vessels, according to analysts at Linerlytica.
The milestone vessel is the container ship MSC Migsan, with a capacity of 11,480 TEU, recently delivered from the Chinese shipyard Zhoushan Changhong Shipyard.
Already the world’s largest container carrier, MSC continues to expand rapidly. Its total fleet capacity has now reached approximately 7.3 million TEU, which is about 57% higher than its closest competitor, Maersk.
The company was founded in 1970 by Gianluigi Aponte, who recently handed over operational control to his children, marking a transition aimed at preserving the company’s long-standing maritime legacy.
Industry experts note that MSC’s rapid growth has largely taken place during the post-2020 container shipping boom and has been driven primarily by organic expansion rather than large-scale acquisitions.
