A fire broke out on 26 November on board the general cargo ship Ostborg while the vessel was undergoing maintenance at a shipyard on Vissersweg in Farmsum, the Netherlands. Authorities reported no injuries and no environmental pollution.
The fire started in the bow section, where around three tonnes of rope containing braided plastic material were stored. Firefighters faced difficult access due to high temperatures and confined space conditions. After several hours of firefighting, the situation was brought under control and the fire was extinguished.
A preliminary assessment suggests the blaze may have started during welding work in the bow area, though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.
Ostborg was built in 2001 and sails under the Netherlands flag. The vessel is 89.25 metres long and 13.3 metres wide.
