Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian research and expedition vessel Professor Molchanov in Svalbard following a court order linked to a multibillion-dollar claim by Ukraine’s Naftogaz.
The vessel was arrested on September 2 in Barentsburg, where it is currently moored.
The seizure was carried out under an order issued by the Nord-Troms og Senja District Court on August 31.
The legal action was initiated by Naftogaz, which is seeking to enforce an arbitration award worth approximately $4.22 billion, together with interest and legal costs, against the Russian Federation.
The claim is connected to assets belonging to Naftogaz that were expropriated in Crimea after 2014.
Professor Molchanov is considered a Russian state-owned asset and is used both for scientific and expedition activities and for commercial voyages, including expedition cruises in the Svalbard region.
Under the Norwegian court order, the vessel is not permitted to leave Barentsburg unless the seizure is lifted by the court or the relevant authorities.
The arrest does not mean that the crew or passengers have been detained. Norwegian authorities have indicated that practical issues involving people onboard will be handled separately in cooperation with the vessel’s operator and local organisations.
The case is unusual because it involves the seizure of a Russian state-owned ship in connection with the enforcement of an international arbitration award.
Naftogaz is attempting to identify and secure Russian state assets in different jurisdictions as part of its efforts to recover compensation awarded through international legal proceedings.
The seizure of Professor Molchanov in Norway therefore represents another step in a broader international enforcement campaign.
The vessel itself is well known in Arctic waters and has been used for research expeditions and commercial cruises around Svalbard.
Its presence in Barentsburg made it accessible to Norwegian authorities once the court approved the arrest.
The case has also triggered a political reaction from Moscow.
Russian officials have strongly criticised the seizure and said they intend to defend Russian state interests and the rights of Russian citizens connected with the vessel.
The incident now combines maritime law, international arbitration and geopolitics in one of the most sensitive Arctic regions.
Professor Molchanov remains moored in Barentsburg while the legal process continues and Norwegian authorities determine the next steps regarding the vessel.
