A strong storm in Italy has thrown a cargo ship with a Ukrainian crew aground

31 January 2025 44

The Cyprus-flagged cargo ship Guang Rong, anchored in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of the small Italian resort of Marina di Massa in Tuscany, was caught in a strong storm on January 29, as a result of which it ran aground.

As reported, strong waves turned the 103-meter vessel, the stern of the ship crashed into the pier and partially destroyed it.

The port sent a rescue helicopter to evacuate the 12 crew members, mainly Ukrainian citizens.

An initial inspection did not reveal any serious damage, but environmentalists are concerned about a possible fuel leak.

Due to the shifting of marble chips, with which the Guang Rong was half loaded, the ship listed to the left side, and now local authorities are deciding whether it can be moved to a safe place, minimizing risks to the environment and shipping.
