Sixteen cargo containers were lost overboard from the container ship Baltic Klipper near the Nab Tower lighthouse off Bembridge, Isle of Wight (England). HM Coastguard has issued navigation warnings, advising local vessels of possible hazards on nearby shipping routes.
The incident occurred at around 18:00 local time on 6 December. Reports indicate that eight of the containers carried bananas, two contained plantains, one carried avocados, and the remaining five were empty. The cargo is classified as non-hazardous, and no injuries among the crew have been reported.
The loss of containers reportedly caused disruptions in the Solent. The P&O Cruises ship Iona, carrying 5,200 passengers, was delayed for 24 hours. Search operations are ongoing, with HM Coastguard conducting aerial searches in the area. The Selsey area—where floating containers were reportedly sighted—has been cordoned off.
