Visund Platform Fire: Equinor Evacuates Workers and Halts Production
today at 10:31 5

A fire on Equinor’s Visund oil and gas platform in the Norwegian North Sea on November 4, 2026, forced a production shutdown and the evacuation of a substantial portion of the workforce.

The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported. There were 128 people on board at the time. According to media reports citing Equinor, 70–80 workers were transferred to nearby offshore installations.

What happened on Visund

Personnel reported smoke shortly before 11 a.m. local time and subsequently discovered flames in an electrical switchboard room. Oil and gas production was halted, and the authorities were notified.

Equinor spokesperson Ellen Maria Skjelsbæk said repairs would be required and that it was too early to say when production could resume. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage had not been disclosed in the available reports. Source: Rig & Refinery

Gas export capacity reduced to zero

According to Gassco notices cited in published reports, Visund’s available gas export capacity was reduced to 2.5 million cubic metres per day from 12:53 p.m. Central European Time on November 4. Available capacity was reduced to zero for the November 5 gas day, with the duration of the outage listed as uncertain.

Visund’s full gas export capacity is 13.2 million cubic metres per day. This figure represents unavailable capacity rather than a confirmed daily supply loss. Actual lost deliveries depend on planned output and the length of the shutdown. Source: PiQ Markets

Visund’s role on the Norwegian continental shelf

Visund is located in the Tampen area, approximately 22 kilometres northeast of the Gullfaks field. Production began in April 1999, followed by gas exports in October 2005.

The development includes a floating platform combining drilling, processing and accommodation facilities, connected to subsea infrastructure.

Oil is transported by pipeline to Gullfaks A for storage and export. Gas travels through the Kvitebjørn pipeline to the Kollsnes processing plant before entering European markets. The shutdown therefore affects an operating link in Norway’s gas export network. Source: Equinor

What matters for the offshore industry

The Visund incident resulted in a production shutdown and the evacuation of more than half the personnel on board. For offshore operators, the incident raises questions about electrical equipment damage, repair requirements and the conditions needed to restore operations safely.

The information currently available does not support conclusions about the technical cause of the fire or the performance of individual protection systems.

The key issues remain the extent of the damage, the repair schedule and the timing of a safe restart. These details will determine the production impact and how long Visund’s export capacity remains restricted.
