Authorities in the Indian state of Kerala have filed a lawsuit against Swiss shipping company MSC, seeking $1.1 billion in compensation for extensive environmental damage. The lawsuit relates to the sinking of the container ship MSC Chitra, which went down off the coast of India in 2010 after colliding with another vessel.
According to local officials, oil and chemicals leaked from the MSC Chitra into the sea, causing significant coastal pollution and impacting local fisheries. Authorities accuse MSC of negligence and failing to adhere to safety measures, leading to one of the largest environmental disasters in India’s maritime history.
MSC has not yet issued an official comment on the matter.
