On November 28, the inland tanker Amici began taking on water in the A.G. Wildervanck Canal in Veendam, Groningen province (Netherlands). The incident caused the vessel’s stern to settle on the canal bed, which temporarily hindered traffic in the area.
At the time, the tanker was carrying liquid fertilizers, complicating operations and requiring additional precautions. Fire services arrived to assess the water ingress and evacuated two crew members, bringing them safely ashore. No injuries were reported.
According to a Groningen provincial spokesperson, the likely cause was improper loading. Authorities and the fire service also confirmed that the vessel itself is not leaking.
As a precaution, containment booms were deployed around the tanker to prevent any potential spill of fuel or fertilizers. Following the incident, the cargo was transferred to another tanker.
Amici is a Dutch-flag inland vessel measuring 85 meters in length and 9 meters in beam.
