While the maritime industry is focused on security risks, delays and operational challenges, scientists are warning about another hidden problem — marine organisms growing on the underwater parts of ships.
When vessels stay stationary for long periods, their hulls become a perfect surface for biofouling. Algae, shellfish and other marine organisms can attach themselves to the hull, propellers and underwater equipment.
After these ships return to international routes, these organisms may be transported to completely different parts of the world. Some non-native species can survive in new environments and become invasive, affecting local ecosystems and marine biodiversity.
The situation has attracted attention because thousands of vessels have experienced prolonged waiting periods in the Gulf region. Experts say that before these ships return to normal operations, additional hull inspections and cleaning may be required.
Biofouling is not only an environmental concern. Heavy growth on a ship’s hull increases water resistance, reduces efficiency, increases fuel consumption and can affect vessel performance.
