Stena Line to expand presence in Latvia with planned acquisition of port operator Terrabalt
Ferry operator Stena Line has announced its intention to acquire 100% of the shares in port operator Terrabalt, located in Liepaja, Latvia’s third-largest port.
If approved by competition and regulatory authorities, Stena Line will take over operations at the terminal handling Ro-Ro cargo, bulk, and general cargo.
Background
-
Since 1997, Liepaja has operated as a special economic zone (SEZ), including the port, an industrial area, and an airport.
-
The Liepaja – Travemünde route is currently served by two Stena Line ferries.
-
The company’s Baltic Sea network also includes the Ventspils – Nynäshamn route.
-
Since May 2023, Stena Line has managed port operations in Ventspils, Latvia’s second-largest port.
Next steps
The acquisition is subject to approval by Latvian competition authorities and other regulators. Until permits are granted, the terminal will continue to be managed by Terrabalt’s current owners.
