Sweden’s Coast Guard has taken control of the cargo vessel Caffa in the Baltic Sea near Trelleborg after concerns that the ship may have been operating under a false flag and could be linked to shipments of stolen Ukrainian grain. The vessel was stopped in Swedish waters for checks of its documentation and overall condition.
Authorities said the operation was prompted primarily by seaworthiness and safety concerns, and an investigation has been opened to clarify the ship’s status, paperwork and the circumstances of its voyage.
Reports also indicate that one crew member has been formally notified of suspicion related to possible violations connected to the vessel’s documentation and operation. Officials have not provided detailed information about the cargo while the checks continue.
The case is being discussed in the context of Sweden’s broader efforts to tighten oversight of vessels suspected of operating in “grey” logistics networks, including ships accused of using irregular documentation or unclear flag status.
