On the morning of September 11, the cargo ship Niki (IMO: 9100968), measuring 41 meters in length with a deadweight of 393 tons, ran aground off the coast of Porticello, Sicily.
The vessel, carrying a cargo of sea bream from Porticello to Tenes, struck the Formica rocks. The impact caused hull damage, resulting in a breach about 1 meter deep that allowed water to enter the ship. There were 8 crew members on board, and no injuries were reported.
Patrol boats and a response team were dispatched to the scene. Pumps were installed to remove the water, while divers carried out temporary repairs to seal the leaks. The vessel was later refloated and towed back to port.
The Italian Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident to determine its cause.
