Nuevo Salmón sinks off the Azores, crew evacuated
The fishing vessel Nuevo Salmón (IMO: 8903600), measuring 28 meters in length and 90 tons in deadweight, sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 miles off the Azores.
Incident details
The evening before, the vessel developed a leak. The crew attempted to stop the water ingress but soon realized it could not be contained. A distress call was issued before the vessel went down.
Rescue operation
The nearby reefer CS Standard (IMO: 9438509), 162 meters long with a deadweight of 13,201 tons, responded to the distress call and successfully rescued all 11 crew members from Nuevo Salmón.
The rescued sailors were later airlifted by helicopter to São Miguel Island (Azores). The cause of the incident has not yet been reported.
