On the morning of January 12, the U.S. Coast Guard reported a fire on a barge on the Mobile River near the Africatown Bridge in Mobile, Alabama.
The barge was anchored when a fire broke out in a cargo hold loaded with scrap metal. The flames spread quickly, involving a large portion of the cargo. River traffic in the area was halted while the Mobile Fire Rescue Department dispatched fireboats to fight the blaze.
The barge crew was evacuated, and no injuries have been reported. The U.S. Coast Guard remained on scene to monitor the situation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
