The Danube River is experiencing one of the most severe droughts in decades, with water levels falling to historic lows across Central and Eastern Europe. Prolonged heatwaves and a lack of rainfall have significantly reduced the river's flow, creating serious challenges for shipping, tourism and energy production.
In Romania, Serbia and Hungary, the falling water has exposed dozens of sunken vessels, extensive sandbanks and even World War II shipwrecks that had remained hidden beneath the river for decades. Some of these wrecks still contain unexploded ammunition, making navigation and future recovery operations even more dangerous.
Commercial shipping on the Danube has been heavily affected. Many cargo vessels have been forced to reduce their loads due to insufficient water depth, while several river cruise operators have changed routes or temporarily suspended voyages. Ports along the river are operating with restrictions as captains carefully navigate through increasingly shallow sections.
The drought is also creating pressure on the energy sector. Several countries that rely on the Danube for cooling nuclear power plants have introduced emergency measures to maintain operations, while governments continue monitoring water levels and electricity demand.
Scientists warn that prolonged heatwaves and extreme droughts are becoming more frequent across Europe. As one of the continent's most important waterways, the Danube plays a vital role in transport, trade and energy, making this year's record-low water levels one of the most significant navigation challenges in recent history.
