Fire Breaks Out on Container Ship PUMBA in the Gulf of Suez: Vessel Towed to Safety
01 August 2025 16

During the night of July 29, a fire broke out in the engine room of the container ship PUMBA (capacity 5059 TEU) while transiting near the Southeast El-Hamra offshore platform in the Gulf of Suez.

Three tugboats — Ocean Dahab, PMS-4, and Misr-Gulf 15 — were deployed by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and successfully brought the fire under control.

No injuries were reported, and there was no environmental impact recorded.

⚓ The vessel was towed to a safe anchorage, away from critical infrastructure and shipping lanes.

Initial reports incorrectly identified PUMBA as being operated by MSC, but updated registry data (voc.myvessel.cn) confirm that the vessel is operated and managed by Sea Lead Shipping Pte Ltd.

Ownership and compliance certificates are held by Draco Buren Shipping and Pumbaa Shipping Inc.
