The Indonesian passenger ferry KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank near Bali on Wednesday, July 2, at approximately 22:56 WIB. The vessel was en route from Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk Port on Bali when the incident occurred.
There were 65 people on board, including 53 passengers and 12 crew members. According to the Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency, four crew members have been confirmed dead, and initially, 61 people were reported missing.
Adverse weather conditions, including waves up to 2.5 meters high, hampered early rescue efforts, though conditions have since improved. So far, 23 people have been successfully rescued, while 38 remain missing, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.
At least 54 personnel, including the navy and police, are involved in the mission, utilizing inflatable boats and a larger rescue vessel dispatched from Surabaya. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, has ordered immediate emergency measures to locate the missing.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the sinking.
