Passenger ferry Vaxö collided with tanker Fandia Swan on the evening of October 23, 2026, in the Stockholm archipelago near the island of Lidingö.
The incident occurred at around 18:30 local time near Gåshaga, close to Hasseludden.
There were 22 passengers on board Vaxö.
No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
According to Sjöfartsverket, the passenger ferry struck the port side of the 126-metre tanker Fandia Swan.
Crew members on board the tanker said visibility in the area was good enough for the vessels to see each other.
They also said they attempted to alert the crew of Vaxö and establish contact before the collision, but were unable to do so.
The exact circumstances of the incident have not yet been established, and these statements are being considered as part of the investigation.
Vaxö sustained damage to its bow section, including the bow visor.
Despite the damage, the ferry remained operational and was able to continue under its own power toward Stockholm.
Vaxö reached Slussen, where all 22 passengers safely disembarked.
Because of the damage to the bow, passengers reportedly left the vessel through the stern.
The ferry was subsequently taken out of service and later sent to a shipyard for repairs.
Damage to both vessels was reported above the waterline, and there were no reports of water ingress.
Preliminary information indicated that Fandia Swan did not suffer serious damage.
Following the collision, the tanker anchored while awaiting further instructions.
The Swedish Coast Guard patrol vessel KBV 311 was sent to assist and monitor the situation.
Fandia Swan remained at anchor while initial inspections were carried out.
By the following evening, the tanker was cleared to continue its voyage and departed the Stockholm archipelago.
Fandia Swan is a Malta-flagged tanker approximately 126 metres long.
At the time of the incident, the vessel was reportedly sailing from Rotterdam toward the Kiel Canal.
Vaxö was operating a passenger service between Vaxholm and Stockholm.
Swedish maritime police and the Coast Guard have opened a preliminary investigation into the collision.
Investigators will seek to determine why the two vessels ended up on intersecting courses and why attempts to establish contact before the collision did not prevent the accident.
The official cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
Despite the damage to Vaxö’s bow, all 22 passengers were unharmed and both vessels remained afloat after the collision.
