Panama Canal Launches NetZero Slot for Low-Carbon Vessels
The Panama Canal Authority has announced the introduction of a new transit booking category — NetZero Slot, designed to encourage emission reductions and support the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The first slot allocation will take place on October 3, 2025, covering the transit week from November 2 to 8. Starting from that date, one weekly transit slot will be reserved for vessels that meet low-emission criteria.
Shipowners awarded a NetZero Slot will benefit from:

the ability to choose their transit date within the assigned week;

a guaranteed passage within 24 hours;

access to the Just-in-Time service;

the option to transfer the slot to an equivalent vessel.
In the initial phase, eligible vessels include dual-fuel ships capable of operating on at least one fuel with a carbon intensity of ≤75 gCO₂e/MJ. Accepted fuels include green methanol, green ammonia, bio-LNG, and bio-LPG. Actual use of these fuels is not yet mandatory — technical readiness of the vessel will be recognized.
Selection will take place weekly according to three criteria:

priority for laden vessels,

followed by vessel tonnage under the PCUMS system,

and in case of a tie, the overall economic contribution through tolls and services.
