Panama Canal Marks 111 Years: Sustainability and New Horizons
On August 15, the Panama Canal celebrated its 111th anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable development and strengthening Panama’s role in global trade.
Since the historic transit of the steamship Ancon in 1914, which for the first time connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Canal has become not only a symbol of engineering progress but also a key driver of Panama’s economic and social development.
According to Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, in the 25 years of Panamanian administration, the Canal’s capacity has doubled, the locks have been expanded, and every dollar earned has been reinvested into infrastructure growth and social projects for the country.
Sustainability Strategy
The Panama Canal is focusing on decarbonization and climate change adaptation, with a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Concrete steps are already underway: hybrid-powered tugboats are entering service, including Isla Barro Colorado and Isla Bastimentos.
Water basin management is another strategic priority. Programs in reforestation, agribusiness, environmental education, and land titling have already benefited thousands of people. A major project — the creation of a reservoir in the Río Indio basin — aims to secure water supply for over 2 million Panamanians and sustain key sectors such as agriculture, industry, education, healthcare, and trade.
