The Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Cape Falcon remains aground off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The vessel grounded on 18 September while attempting to anchor about six nautical miles east of the Port of Gladstone.
Cape Falcon is 292 metres long and has a deadweight of approximately 182,000 tonnes. Tugs were sent to assist, but two attempts to refloat the vessel were unsuccessful. Ten harbour tugs took part in the second operation, which moved the ship only slightly. Authorities are assessing how to refloat it safely.
According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, no crew injuries have been reported. There have also been no reports of hull damage, breaches or pollution.
Cape Falcon is not blocking the shipping channel into Gladstone. The response has nevertheless affected some vessel movements because port tugs and pilotage resources have been redirected to the operation.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has opened an investigation. Its investigators plan to interview the crew and examine voyage data, vessel tracking records and weather information. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has detained the vessel pending an assessment of its seaworthiness.
