The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that on April 15, at approximately 17:20 local time, the cargo vessel Hong Hai 16, carrying a load of crushed stone, capsized off the coast of the Philippines. The ship was reportedly operated by Keen Peak Corporation.
There were 25 crew members onboard — 12 Chinese nationals and 13 Filipinos. Following the incident, the PCG launched a large-scale search and rescue operation, supported by additional units from the PCG station in Sablayan.
As of now, 14 crew members have been rescued — eight Chinese and six Filipinos. The PCG also confirmed the recovery of two deceased crew members, one Chinese and one Filipino, bringing the official death toll to two. Nine crew members remain missing.
Reports from the scene indicate a minor oil spill and the presence of a marine diesel odor. In response, five segments of oil containment booms — covering approximately 250 meters — were deployed to contain the leak and prevent further environmental impact.
Search and rescue operations have been intensified by the PCG, with environmental monitoring underway. Initial visual inspections reveal that the vessel is partially submerged but remains upright. There are concerns that some crew members may still be trapped in the engine room.
