🌿 Norway is tightening environmental standards for maritime transport in its fjords. Starting in 2026, vessels under 10,000 gross tons entering the iconic Geiranger and Nærøy fjords will be banned from using diesel engines. These ships must switch to zero-emission or low-emission technologies, with all other vessels required to comply by 2032.
This measure aims to protect vulnerable Arctic ecosystems and reduce air pollution in UNESCO-protected natural areas.
🔋 The Norwegian government actively supports the transition to clean energy solutions, including:
• hybrid propulsion systems,
• liquefied natural gas (LNG),
• biomethanol,
• hydrogen,
• batteries and solar sails.
The company Hurtigruten is already developing a groundbreaking hybrid vessel equipped with large-scale batteries and solar sails, setting a new standard for sustainable marine operations.
🛳️ This initiative marks a significant step in the fight against climate change and serves as a model for other countries seeking to modernize shipping in line with sustainable development goals.
