Maersk Completes World’s First Fleet of Methanol-Powered Container Ships

On May 27, Danish shipping and logistics giant Maersk took delivery of the container vessel Axel Maersk, marking the completion of the world’s first series of large dual-fuel container ships powered by methanol.

The naming ceremony took place at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) shipyard in South Korea.

Sailing under the Danish flag, Axel Maersk measures 336.78 meters in length, 53.5 meters in width, and has a draft of 18 meters. The vessel is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and has a deadweight of 189,508 tons.

Axel Maersk is currently on its maiden voyage along the East-West trade lane, serving Maersk customers between Asia and Europe.
